Things to do in Sydney

Popular things to do in Sydney

Sydney is a great place to visit with a wealth of great attractions, experiences and things to do on offer. A city with something for all ages and interest groups.

The iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House are high on pretty much every visitor's list of things to see in the city. The nearby Rocks area, near the Circular Quay ferry port, is an excellent place to wander and take in these sights.

The water front Opera Bar, in front of the Opera House, is an incredible place to take a drink on a warm evening, located right between the illuminated Harbour Bridge and the Opera house, as the fruit bats fly overhead from the nearby Royal Botanical Gardens.

Sydney is a city which can be enjoyed from high up above, either in the Sydney Tower Eye’s panoramic viewing platform, or even better, from the revolving restaurant at the top of the Tower Eye. Just below the Tower Eye, and also in the CBD (Central Business District which seems to be pronounced Soy Boy Doy!) you have Hyde Park, a great place to chill out and relax with its water fountains and war memorial. Just off the park you have St Mary’s Cathedral and the Australian Museum. Just north of Hyde Park you have the Royal Botanic Gardens, and to the west of this the Wolloomooloo area with its harbour front wharf and great restaurants.

Darling Harbour is home to a host of Sydney’s top attractions including Sydney Wildlife, with its many native iconic Australian animals and reptiles, Sydney Sealife Aquarium, Madame Tussauds, the Australian National Maritime Museum and the IMAX theatre. Darling Harbour is also home to a host of great places to eat and numerous harbour dinner cruise boats.

Underneath the northern end of Sydney Harbour Bridge you have the Luna Park, theme park with stunning views of the harbour and the Sydney skyline.

Sydney most popular attractions

Sydney’s most popular main stream tourist attractions include Wildlife Sydney, Sydney Sealife Aquarium, Madame Tussauds Sydney, the Australian National Maritime Museum, Luna Park, Sydney Aquarium, Sydney Opera House, The Imax Theatre, The Sydney Tower Eye, The Australian Museum, Hyde Park, the Royal Botanic Garden and Taronga Zoo.

Great day trip destinations from Sydney

There are many great places to visit in the Sydney Area, for those wanting to see a little more of New South Wales.

Bondi beach is a popular favourite, with its famous surf, fine soft sands and seafront cafes, restaurants and bars – oh and I forgot to mention its life guards! Just a 20 – 30 minute bus trip from the centre. You can get the ‘Bondi Bendy’ bus from Hyde Park, among other places!

The stunning Blue Mountains are a few hours drive inland, and a great escape from the city. The town of Katoomba is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Blue Mountains area, and a great place to head for the day, or a few days. Echo Point, with a visitor centre just on the edge of Katoomba, offers visitors amazing views out over the Blue Mountains and the famous three sisters rock formations. But to really get into the Blue Mountains we’d recommend a day at Scenic World, which is home to several record break attractions, the world’s steepest railway, Australia’s highest cable car and Australia’s biggest cable car.

The Hunter Valley is also a great location to visit from Sydney, home of Australia’s famous hunter Valley Wines. The popular tourist destinations of Cessnock and Pokolbin are a few hours drive north of Sydney, and the area is great for visiting as many wine producers at their ‘cellar door’ as you can handle, sampling great local produce, taking scenic flights and wine tourism.

The northern NSW beaches from the Entrance, through Terigel and Avoca are also stunning, and well worth dropping in for the night on way to or from the Hunter Valley.

Manly Beach, which is easy to get to by ferry from Sydney is home to some great attractions and surfing schools. The ferry trip to Manly is also a great low cost way of seeing Sydney from the harbours waters. Or drive to Manly and head up the coats to Palm Beach and observe the Barrenjoey Lighthouse.

The nearby Ku-Ring-Gai Chase national park is an area of outstanding national beauty, and a great place to spend the day, have a barbeque (gas barbeques are provided for free public use), rent a kayak and explore the local wildlife.

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Sydney is one of the top vacations in Australia to be enjoyed. A ferry is the perfect way to first see Sydney, and an excellent view of the Sydney Harbor Bridge and Sydney Opera House. I spent 3 months living and working in Sydney too, before moving on to other places on the east coast of Australia. And if I had to pick a place to live in Australasia Sydney would be the one. I lived in Double bay.
