The Tomatina began in 1945. During the huge battle, which starts and ends with a gun shot, the participants hurl tomatoes at each other. In the end, the traditional hosing down of the plaza and the participants takes place.
This odd event has attracted the attention of media professionals from all over the world, who come to Buñol to experience for themselves and report on to people in their respective countries. In August 2002, this event was declared a Festivity of International Tourist Interest.
