Add a little adrenaline to life with a lesson at the Extreme Academy…
Whether you are a complete novice or experienced in wind and wave sports, the Extreme Academy is an amazing place to try something new or sharpen your skills. You might just surprise yourself by what you can achieve with a little help
from our incredible instructors…
Surfing - Surfing is at the very heart of Cornish culture; it is perhaps the purest form of
watersport and a great way to experience the ocean. We offer lessons for all levels of
experience, from total beginners to those wishing to build on existing skills.
Watergate Bay is an excellent place to learn to surf – consistent waves and plenty of
space provide the ideal conditions for beginners. Our instructors are all talented surfers
themselves and all hold surf lifesaving qualifications; safety is their key concern.
Lessons are devised to ensure that each student learns at their own pace; many students are able to stand and ride a wave to the beach at the end of their first lesson.
The sense of excitement that first wave provides is unforgettable…
Kite buggying or landboarding - These lessons take the art of traction kiting to a whole new level…
Once you’ve mastered flying a traction kite (we recommend you complete our two hour
traction kite lesson first), we add some wheels to the fun. Choose a buggy, in which you
are seated with three wheels beneath you and foot pegs for steering, or a land board –
like an off-road version of a skateboard, complete with foot bindings.
Kite buggying or landboarding requires more coordination than simply flying the kite – you’ll need to be thinking about what’s happening with the buggy or landboard, as well as what the kite’s doing – but when you get the hang of it, it’s completely exhilarating.
Mountain Board - Round up a group of friends and book a day at the Extreme Academy mountain board
course – you simply won’t be able to stop smiling. Mountain boards are like big, off-road
skateboards complete with foot bindings, designed to travel downhill over grassy, uneven
terrain – which is exactly what the Extreme Academy mountain board course offers.
Even if you’ve never strapped something with wheels to your feet before, you’ll find mountain boarding quick to learn (yes, you will probably fall over, but that’s all part of the fun – and you’ll have plenty of safety equipment to protect you) and a real buzz.
Two courses – a beginners one and a Boarder X Track, with lots of featured terrain – give students plenty of opportunity to progress from straightforward descents to more technical tricks and skills. Lessons range from beginner’s to advanced.
Waveski - Waveski is a fantastically accessible sport, great for all ages and all degrees of experience.
If the idea of surfing waves appeals to you, but you feel that standing on a board is not your cup of tea, waveski is the way to go.
A waveski itself is like a kayak, but riders sit on the waveski, not in it, so there is no sense
of being ‘trapped’ inside the craft. It is a quick sport to pick up – students are usually
surfing waves on their waveski within their first hour – yet it creates just as much
exhilaration as regular surfing.
Carl Coombes, former Waveski World Champion, runs the school, providing an outstanding level of expertise.
and more - kite surf, paddle surf and traction kite are also on offer!
