Description

Set in the stunning Los Gaitanes Gorge, the Caminito Del Rey (Kings Path or Kings Bridge) at El Chorro is well worth a visit for those who love countryside, walks and views.

El Chorro is translated as the Spurt - and it is the point where several rivers came together through the Gaitanes Gorge flooding the Guadelhorce valley at times of storms in the past.

Dams and Hydro Electric plants have now stopped this dangerous natural phenomenon but the area is no less dramatic.

The Camino Del Rey (Kings Path or Kings Bridge) is a stunning high level foot path with a small bridge over the Gorge, which clings to the edge of the sheer cliff. Unfortunately the actual Camino it is in a state of disrepair and is now closed to the general public.

Climbers and those suitably well equipped may still cross the path.

But dont let the fact that the path is closed stiop you visiting - stunning scenery and walkways up to the path are well worth a visit.

Special Notes

To take the walk up to the Camino del Rey, from Alora, as you approach El Chorro you cross the bridge towards the village (which has a train station and nice hotel/restaurant and small shop/bar) and take a left before the station.

This takes you down a dirt track by the water. Follow this road until you leave the water a little and there is a parking area, in front of an ornate railway bridge. From here you can walk up the track to great views of the Caminito.

It is also well worth staying on the Alora road and driving up past the Camino del Rey and onwards about 10 miles to the lakes. An area of stunning scenery.
