Battle Lake Golf Course

Description

PGA Golf Professional Chuck Higgins, who has owned the course since 1990, has a refreshing view of what the average golfer wants out of his round. “Golf should be entertaining and fun, as well as challenging,” he says. “People who come out to play the game are often looking for an escape from the pressures of work, family and life. Golf is a great opportunity to relax and enjoy life while spending 4 or 5 hours with friends."

But you’ll also find that Battle Lake has a great layout with plenty of challenges to test your game: doglegs requiring precise tee shots; carries over and around water; and scenic terrain of gently rolling hills enhancing the views of Battle Lake and the surrounding countryside.

So come out to join the fun at Battle Lake and bring your friends with you. Great course layout! Inexpensive green fees! First rate practice facility! Birdie Girls! What else could a golfer want?

In the spring of 2003, owner & Head Golf Professional, Chuck Higgins, introduced golfers in the Central Texas area to the Battle Lake Birdie Girls, a crew of attractive young college-age women on staff to greet and help golfers.
The Birdie Girls, dressed in eye catching outfits and loaded with "talent," meet golfers at their cars with golf carts, ring up their green fees in the the golf shop, take food orders at the snack bar and start them off at the first tee. They also serve as hostesses in our tournament pavilion and drive the beverage carts out on the course. The crew works all summer on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and for the Tuesday night scrambles at the course. They also provided friendly welcomes to golfers at tournaments and outings.

During their first golfing season on the job, the Birdie Girls proved an enormous success and are now in their 3rd season of making Battle Lake Golf Course a very unique golf experience.

"We might not have the longest or the most difficult course,” says Higgins. “But we do have one distinct claim to fame."

Battle Lake Golf Course is:

"The hardest course in Texas...

To keep your eye on the ball!"

Birdie Girl Schedule is April thru Sept.

A Friendly Course With a Friendly Layout

Battle Lake Golf Course has a history stretching back to the days when golfers putted out their balls on “sand greens”. Originally, Battle Lake was a nine-hole course; then in the 1970s, it was remodeled and another nine holes were added.

When current owner, Chuck Higgins took over in 1990, he made some renovations as well. Under his ownership, services and facilities have greatly improved, including the building of a tournament pavilion and one of the best practice facilities in the area. “The course layout was always inviting,” Higgins says, “but it had some rough edges.” Among the improvements were the additions of cart paths around the greens and tee boxes.

The course is located in a rural area about 15 miles outside Waco, Texas, amid a setting of gently rolling countryside that adds uphill and downhill challenges to the course. But this is a very user friendly golf course. If you miss a fairway, it’s still possible to reach the hole without significant trouble in most cases.

The back nine is bordered by the 80-acre Battle Lake which sets a beautiful scene as the backdrop on many holes. Our par-3s are as challenging as you’ll find anywhere. There are lots of dogleg holes that allow the long hitter to take a chance and cut some corners. And the greens are always fantastic putting surfaces. They’re a bit difficult because they’re small – making accuracy on your approach shots a necessity.
